South Watuppa Mill Stones

A number of these round stones line the shore of South Watuppa Pond in Fall River, along the former railroad (now a bike path). The extend into Westport also. They appear to be made of a green sandstone. They are about 5-ft diameter and 1-ft thick. They don't appear to be grist mill stones. I'd love to find out what they are, where they came from, and how they got there.

  1. I have determined that they are likely edge-roller (aka crush mill) stones. But where did they come from? And why are there so many?

  2. Sorry about my very late reply, but I believe they were "flywheel" stones to keep the mills power running at a more constant speed, when a line of spindles or looms were engaged or disengaged.

  3. That is not correct. I have since learned from an expert that these are grindstones, used to sharpen tools in a factory. I still don't know where they came from though. The stone used is likely from Ohio.
